I use windows 7 64 bit home premium, all of a sudden my desktop icons began to disappear after every reboot even though I have "Show Desktop Icons" checked in the desktop properties menu.

When I reboot the icons show for just a moment then disappear, I open desktop properties and uncheck show desktop icons and then recheck the box and they show up again until the next shutdown or reboot.

Had this happen to a user at my place of work. This was the culprit but it came from a user having the shortcuts and just not using them. Of course they would show up on the desktop for any user of the machine, but in my case, there was only 1 user of the laptop, so it works fine for her.

Not a fix, but an acceptable solution, in my case. I've seen similar, and although the reason why eludes me, the fix was to right click desktop, view, tick "show desktop icons".
